For most of us, Detroit is "Motorcity" or the home of Motown - but with over 300 years of interesting history behind it there's so much to explore! FIRST MENTIONED IN 1670 - The area that we know as Detroit today was first mentioned in records kept by French missionaries; there was a stone idol venerated by the locals - which the French unfortunately smashed to bits with an axe. In its place they planted 12 pear trees (each named for one of Christ's apostles).
